Dear Choire,
I read your article about Chelsea and i would like to answer some of your comments such as "Mr. Mimran would undoubtedly hate Mr. Hammond's paintings, and that can only be a good thing." First, i don't hate anyone and certainly not the work of other artists. Second, my billboards are not there to give lessons to anyone it is just reflecting some points of view that someone might or might not agree with. By your comments on my work and myself, you express a greater intolerance towards artists views than the one your fantasy make you believe i have.
Sincerely yours
Patrick Mimran
Dear Mr. Mimran,
Thanks for your note.
Please don't be mistaken: I have a huge intolerance for art and artists that I find offensive. Is that a bad thing? I find myself divided -- art, like many things I love deeply, barely matters. In any event, I am not a fan of your billboards as art or as billboards. I did agree with one -- once. More often I find them philosophically retrograde, rude, poorly-conceived, and (from perhaps a ridiculously Marxist point of view) wasteful. My sources tell me that the annual combined cost of your billboards is $60,000, which makes me basically ill with rage.
All that being said, who cares what I think? I hardly do.
I hope this finds you well.
